Chapter 15

Get My Zombie Back

Madame Tibodet glared at me as if it were my fault that her zombie had been stolen.

“You sent Carl on errands with no regard to the danger of him being discovered,” I said. “This nut job, Arseton, came to the botanica and saw him.”

“The nut job came here because of you,” Madame Tibodet said in her lyrical Caribbean accent.

“It wasn’t Missy’s fault,” Luisa said from behind the botanica’s counter. “He has a vendetta against all things supernatural, and it was inevitable that he would come here.”

“How are you going to get my zombie back?”

“How are we going to get him back?” Luisa asked angrily. “You’re the one who controls him.”

“They kidnapped a friend of mine, too,” I said. “A living person has priority over a dead one.”

“Carl is like family to me,” said Madame Tibodet. “I’ve tried to summon him, but he hasn’t returned.”

“They tied him up with rope,” I said. When I wondered why they used rope on Carl and zip ties on Matt, I had the sickening realization that the zip ties would have probably cut through the semi-decayed flesh.

“Do you have a way of locating him?” I asked.

I knew a couple of locating spells. For the best of them, I would need a beloved possession of Matt’s, which I didn’t have. The other spell was less accurate and relied on visually finding the white van. The problem was, it was apparent the demon had cloaked the van with invisibility.

“Voodoo isn’t like your witchy magic,” Madame Tibodet said. “I can’t just wave a wand to find out where Carl is.”

“For the record, I don’t use a wand. Are you saying there’s absolutely nothing you can do? This group of crazies is going to kill my friend and make Carl dead again. Permanently dead.”

“I can pray to the loas. If they choose to help me, they might tell me where Carl and your friend are.”

“Don’t you have any magic that can search for them?” I asked. “Wouldn’t you have a link to Carl since you created him?”

“No, I did not create him,” she said adamantly. “I am not a caplata.”

When she saw my confused look, she added. “I am not a sorceress. I am a manbo, a priestess, who worships the loas and the spirits of our departed loved ones, helping my clients communicate with them.”

“I thought you were a sorceress. I thought you created Carl to work for you.”

Anger flashed in Madame Tibodet’s eyes. Unlike at the moment, I was usually pretty good at not offending people, especially those with different backgrounds from mine. It’s a quality I learned from nursing.

“Carl was not created to be my slave. Carl is my brother.”

Both Luisa and I gasped in surprise. “I’m so sorry,” I said.

“He was murdered after we came to America. While his soul was waiting for permission from the loas to pass to the afterlife, a bokor—a male sorcerer—turned him into a zombie. The bokor offered to sell him to me. If I said no, Carl would have been sold to someone else to be their slave.
